We are sadden to report that John Holland passed away Sunday morning. His daughter Manja reports that he passed away peacefully after having had a particularly challenging couple of weeks.

John was one of the founding fathers of the complex systems approach in general and of the Santa Fe Institute and The University of Michigan Center for the Study of Complex Systems in particular. He was a pioneer in genetic algorithms and classifier systems. Most optimization textbooks now include a chapter on such evolutionary algorithms.

John is Professor of Psychology and of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan; he is also Trustee and External Professor at the Santa Fe Institute. John received his BS in MIT, his MS in Mathematics from the University of Michigan, and his PhD in computer science from the University of Michigan in 1959, the first recipient of that degree. He received Louis Levy Medal from The Franklin Institute in 1961, a MacArthur Fellowship in 1992, and the University’s highest award for a senior faculty member, the Russell Lectureship in 1993.

John was 86 years old. He finished two books in the last three years. We will miss the inspiration and creativity that  were his hallmark and the impressive guidance and mentor-ship he gave to students and faculty.
